A Workshop Built on Tradition

Pebble-beacon began as a small restoration studio in a converted barn, where the founder spent evenings repairing furniture that neighbours brought in. What started as a passion project gradually evolved into a dedicated practice, as word spread about the quality of work being produced in that modest space.

Today, the workshop has grown to accommodate larger projects and more complex restorations, but the approach remains unchanged. Every piece receives individual attention, and every decision is guided by respect for the original craftsmanship.

Philosophy of Preservation

We believe that antique wooden chests represent more than functional objects. They are vessels of memory, carrying within their grain the stories of the families who owned them. A military campaign chest may have crossed oceans. A pine blanket box may have held generations of quilts handed down through a family.

This understanding shapes how we approach each project. Rather than imposing a uniform standard of perfection, we work to preserve the individual character of each piece. Sometimes this means leaving evidence of age and use that contributes to the chest's story. Other times, it means careful intervention to prevent further deterioration.

Careful attention to original construction methods guides every restoration

The choice between conservation and restoration is never taken lightly. Conservation aims to stabilize an object in its current state, halting deterioration without significantly altering appearance. Restoration goes further, returning the piece closer to its original condition. We discuss these options with every client, ensuring they understand the implications of each approach for their specific situation.

Our Values

Authenticity

We source period-appropriate materials and use traditional techniques whenever possible, ensuring restorations remain true to their origins.

Transparency

Clients receive detailed assessments before work begins, with clear explanations of what can be achieved and at what cost.

Documentation

We photograph and record the restoration process, providing clients with a record of work performed on their pieces.

Sustainability

Restoration extends the life of existing furniture, keeping crafted objects out of landfills and reducing demand for new production.

Materials and Methods

The workshop maintains a selection of reclaimed woods salvaged from period buildings and furniture beyond repair. This allows us to source replacement material that matches not only the species but the age and character of original components.

For finishes, we blend traditional formulations including shellac, beeswax, and linseed oil with select modern products where they offer superior protection without compromising appearance. Hardware repairs utilize skilled metalworkers who understand historical manufacturing techniques.

Our tools range from antique hand planes to precision power equipment, selected based on what each task requires. The goal is always the best outcome for the piece, not adherence to any single methodology.
